Innovation Initiatives

Since 2015, IIITDM Kancheepuram has systematically developed processes to support student- and faculty-led innovation. The design-centric engineering curriculum at the undergraduate level (started in 2014) enables students from different branches to collaboratively identify interesting real-world problems and develop ideas and translate them into PoCs between semesters 3-6. A bi-annual event called EHIPASSIKO is organized to help students showcase their concepts to industry experts. The 13th edition of the event was organized in April 2022.
In 2016, the institute setup MaDeIT Innovation Foundation, a design-driven Technology Business Incubator and a Section 8 company. MaDeIT offers a four-year roadmap for hard-tech startups. It has inducted and supported more than 50 startups till date.
The Institute Innovation Council (IIC, setup in 2018) comprising student and faculty members organizes MIC- and self-driven events to create awareness and encourage students to participate in competitions such as the Smart India Hackathon, Toycathon, Mars Rover, AUV and SAE. IIC also encourages faculty to develop as Innovation Ambassadors.
In 2021-22, IIITDM published its IPR Policy and setup the IPR cell. The IPR policy and the cell encourage faculty and students to translate research and PoCs into technologies and products, and also commercialize the same. In the three-year period 2019-22, the institute filed about 25+ patents.
In 2021-22, IIITDM also adopted the National Innovation & Startup Policy and setup an innovation fund to give thrust to the innovation initiatives. The above initiatives have helped place IIITDM in the Band-Excellent in the Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievement (ARIIA 2020 and 2021).
