Academic Evaluation

'Interactive Learning Approach'

The Institute adopts continuous evaluation methodology in all courses with the adoption of “interactive learning approach”. In addition to regular paper exam, projects and discussions also form a part of continuous evaluation.

Grading System

The Institute follows a credit based relative grading scheme. IIITDM Kancheepuram follows a continuous assessment process, with an approximate weightage of 50% for quizzes (cycle tests/assignments) and the remaining for end semester examinations. Students are awarded with letter grades in each of the courses they have registered based on their performance in the quizzes, assignments and end semester examinations. The letter grades and associated points are as listed below:

Grades Points
S 10
A 9
B 8
C 7
D 6
E 4
U 0
W 0
I 0
H 0
L 0
  • U - Failure in the course
  • W - Failure due to insufficient attendance in course
  • I - Incomplete
  • H - Completed - (SSG/NSO)
  • L - Incomplete - (SSG/NSO)

Based on the grades secured a student’s Grade Point Average (GPA) for a semester is calculated as per the following formula:

CGPA Formula

where Ci - Credit of the course, GP - grade point of the course and, i - total number of registered courses in the semester including those in which the student obtained ‘U’ and ‘W’ grades but not cleared.

Cumulative Grade Point Average at the scale of 10 (CGPA) would be the GPA of all courses calculated on a cumulative basis till the current semester.

Attendance

IIITDM Kancheepuram is a residential Institute and students are expected to maintain 100% attendance in all the courses that they have registered. A minimum of 85% attendance is required in each course to appear for the end semester examination. Students failing in the attendance criterion will be awarded W grade in the respective course and have to repeat the course when it is offered next time.
